Updated: Jul 19, 2020

UV Lights for HVAC Systems?

The idea that mold and bacteria, can multiply in your HVAC system and circulate through your ductwork is a scary thought especially in wake of the corona virus pandemic.

Luckily there is a proven solution to killing these germs. The NCBI report studied the levels of fungi growing on insulation within air-handling units. After observing over a 4-month period the NCBI reported significantly lower than the levels than in the control group.

Can UV Light Kill COVID-19?

UV light may be able to kill coronavirus. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Vaporous hydrogen peroxide, ultraviolet germicidal irradiation, and moist heat are the most promising decontamination methods” for COVID-19 commonly called coronavirus.

Testing is still in the early stages, but promising results are expected.

The lights are more effective with a high intensity over a long duration Since HVAC UV germicidal irradiation lights are on full-time in most cases, the dose is considered quite high.
